In a celebration of the victory for the gay and lesbian community, Senator Katherine Zappone proposed to her long standing partner during a rally.
Senator Zappone and her partner Ann Louise Gilligan were married in Canada because Ireland had not yet legalised same-sex marriages.
According to Gilligan, "I said yes 12 years ago in Canada and now we are bringing the yes home. Yes, yes, yes! Today we are free! Yes, yes, yes."
