One major reason was the high bride price demanded by the brides family compared to the much cheaper dowry collected by families of brides living in IDP camps.
This led us to ask Pulse readers in a poll what they thought of the bride prices in the Northern part of Nigeria.
Results from the poll revealed that 77.8% of Pulse readers say that bride prices in the North is higher compared to other ethnic groups, adding that grooms pay through their noses to settle a bride's dowry while 22.2% readers say dowry in the North is cheaper compared to other ethnic groups.
