4 things prohibited at Muslim weddings

We list the things Muslim weddings do not permit, following Aliko Dangote's reported ban of alcohol from his daughter's forthcoming wedding.

The ban on alcohol at the wedding is said to be for religious reasons. The billionaire is a Muslim as is father of the groom, Mohammed Dikko Abubakar who held the office of Inspector General of Police from 2012 to 2014.

The couple are practicing Muslims, too, which makes the ban on alcohol acceptable.

So apart from alcohol, what else is not permitted at Muslim weddings?

1. Revealing outfits

Every fashion that negates the Islamic principle of moderacy and decency is unacceptable. One of the most important pillars of the religion is decency and that must be upheld on all occasions and at all events, weddings included.

Kolanuts here is used as a symbolism for everything that has fetish undertones or perceived as fetish.

Everything -  bitter kola, kolanuts, alligator pepper, etc -  that can be associated with fetish practices is expected to be shunned.

3. Pork

Just as alcohol is prohibited from being served, pork, snake meat, dog, and other Islam-barred meals are not to be presented to guests at any Muslim wedding, too.

4. Undue extravagance

Moderacy at weddings is not limited to just dressing, it extends to spending, too!

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And those, who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor niggardly, but hold a medium (way) between those (extremes)” [al-Furqaan 25:67].

Lavish spending to please men or overdoing things to the point of running into debts is unwise and considered Haraam [abomination] in Islam.
