Fans annoyed by GOT’s portrayal of Sansa Stark's wedding night

Fans were outraged about the Game of Thrones portrayal of Sansa Stark wedding night calling it horrendous and atrocious.

Aside from the Mad Men series finale, the biggest story in entertainment today was last night’s depiction of Sansa Stark’s wedding night on HBO’s Game of Thrones—which ended with a disturbing scene depicting her rape at the hands of Ramsay Bolton, her new husband. It created an uproar, and it won’t surprise you to learn that many readers were outraged about this calling it horrendous and atrocious, though that particular scene never occurred in the novels.

However George RR Martin in turn defends the Black wedding Scene in the show. Martin addressed those readers today in a special blog post. Most of his comments deal with the fact that the show has departed from the book, rather than the specific scene in question, but you can read his words as pretty solid support for HBO:

I have a lot of fans asking me for comment.

Let me reiterate what I have said before.

How many children did Scarlett O’Hara have? Three, in the novel. One, in the movie. None, in real life: she was a fictional character, she never existed. The show is the show, the books are the books; two different tellings of the same story.

Martin went further in his support of HBO, noting that the task of adapting a long, complex novel is not easy, and that small changes in the beginning can become significant differences over time.

There has seldom been any TV series as faithful to its source material, by and large…but the longer the show goes on, the bigger the butterflies become. And now we have reached the point where the beat of butterfly wings is stirring up storms, like the one presently engulfing my email…And yes, more and more, they differ. Two roads diverging in the dark of the woods, I suppose… but all of us are still intending that at the end we will arrive at the same place.
