France is set to pass a bill to ban models who are below 121 lbs as models are been targeted to promote healthy body images in fashion.
Reports reveal modeling agencies or label that hire girls below the required body weight would be fined up to $79,000 or could face up to six months in jail. . This would apply to both the catwalk and adverting campaigns.
To enforce the bill, there would be regular weight checks, girls would present a medical certificate showing a BMI of at least 18 (roughly a weight of 121 lbs and height of 5’9”) before being hired for a job.
This reportedly extends to foreign models taking up jobs in France as well. The bill is set to very likely be passed will be presented at parliament today, March 17 2015.
