Man to remain in jail for 1 year over narcotic deal

The accused was arraigned on a one-count charge bordering on the offence.

Two suspects arrested with 462kg of Indian Hemp.

Oloyede was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a one-count charge bordering on the offence.

He, however, pleaded guilty to the charge.

He had no legal representation.

Following his plea, the Prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan tendered several evidences before the court to establish his case.

They included: a written statement of the accused, a request for scientific aid form, a drug analysis form as well as a bulk of the exhibit.

These were accordingly admitted by the court and marked as exhibits.

Before his sentence, the accused begged the court to be lenient on him, and promised to turn a new leaf if granted the opportunity.

Delivering judgment, the trial judge, Justice Muslim Hassan, found the accused guilty as charged, and convicted him.

“On the evidence adduced by prosecution, the accused is found guilty as charged and is accordingly convicted.

“He is hereby sentenced to a term of one year imprisonment to begin from the date of his arrest,’’ she said.

The court also ordered the drug exhibit to be destroyed if no appeal subsists against the judgment.

In the charge, the accused was said to have committed the offence on July 13 at Igbo-Efon in Aja Lagos.

The prosecutor said that 1.1kg of Cannabis Sativa, popularly known as Indian Hemp was recovered from the accused who reportedly traded in same.

The offence is said to have contravened the provisions of Sections 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Law of the Federation, 2004.
