Alumni to reportedly raise N408.5m scholarships for indigent, first class students
The Unilag Alumni Association has pledged that N408.5m in scholarships will be given to indigent, first class students of the varsity.
Vanguard reports that N348million will go to 500 indigent students while N60.5million will be given in scholarships to 100 students with 4.5 and above GPA.
According to the reports, the association also listed some prominent Nigerians including Minister of Communication, Barrister Adebayo Shittu for awards.
The chairman of the association, Dr Lukman Adeoti, made the disclosure during a press briefing to usher in the AGM/Annual alumni week of the association held at the Afe Babalola Auditorium, University of Lagos, Akoka.
While speaking on the many achievements of the association, Dr Adeoti, stated that the group has secured 10 hectares of land at Owode, Obafemi, Ogun State in it's continued support for students at various levels in order to achieve academic excellence.
He also took time to thank governor Akinwunmi Ambode for his support while also calling on well-meaning Nigerians to identify with its programmes tagged ‘Support Our University Projects’, SOUP such as Indigent Students and scholarship awards; Academic Excellence and Professional project.
Under these projects, the association organises seminars to help under-achiever students in Third Class and probation as well as Skill Acquisition Training/Entrepreneurial development programme.
Vanguard also reports that, as part of the week-long activities, Special Jumaat Prayers will be held at the University Central Mosque today, Saturday, March 10, while special a Thanksgiving has been slated for Sunday, March 12, at the UNILAG Chapel.
The event will round up on Sunday with the AGM, election of new officers and Award night.
Among the prominent awardees are Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS, who will be honoured with Distinguished University Administrator Award; Chief Henry Oladele Ajomale, Chairman, All Progressive Congress, APC, Lagos, will be receiving Distinguished Democratic Leadership Award; Babatunde Fowler, Chairman Tax Board will be given Tax Legend Award; Minister of Communication, Barrister Adebayo Shittu, for Innovation in Information and Communication Skill Award; the chairman Police Service Commission, Dr. Mike Okiro as well as many other distinguished Nigerians.
Unilag produces first ever student with a 5.0 CGPA
A student of the University of Lagos who was the first ever to graduate with a 5.0 CGPA, was rewarded with N500, 000.
Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Rahamon Bello, said the student, Daniel Dada Ayodele, was the star of their 2014/2015 convocation ceremony.
According to Punch, the VC along with 2 other top academics, Prof Jerry Gana and Dr. Sunny Kuku, showered the Ekiti-born graduate with praises.
Dr. Sunny Kuku pledged to give Ayodele N500, 000 while singing his praises.
Fellow students of the school have been hailing the young man and calling him a genius, to which Ayodele replied;
"I do not have to be a genius to get the results of a genius. I believe everyone can achieve whatever they want to achieve in life. The best way to serve God is through excellence in whatever we do.
He also added that, "However, we cannot all be doctors, engineers, pharmacists, among others. So to my colleagues, I urge them to remain steadfast in their various undertakings in life."
Dada also received other prizes at the convocation ceremony which include the VC's prize, Dean's prize, UNILAG Parent Forum prize, Tony Elumelu Legacy prize, the UNILAG Alumni Association prize, the late Eni Njoku Academic prize, Prof Tolu Odugbemu prize, and the late Prof. Adetokunbo Sofoluwe prize.
