3 students hospitalized, 40 arrested in tuition fee protest

Three students of the Makerere University, Uganda, have been hospitalized while at least 40 others have been arrested as protests over tuition fee policy continues.

The students were protesting over the management's policy that they must pay 100 per cent of their tuition fee within the first six weeks of resuming for a semester.

According to the Daily Monitor of Uganda, the university security officer, Jackson Mucunguzi, said three of the arrested students were apprehended while trying to enter the residence of the Vice Chancellor, John Ddumba.

Mucunguzi said the three hospitalized students had fainted after security personnel sprayed them with pepper spray and were rushed treatment.

Student Pulse gathered the University Council had called a crisis meeting after the second day of the protest, insisting that students pay their tuition fees as directed.

But the students resumed their protest on Wednesday after failing to strike a deal with the university administration on the policy.

Policemen called in to quell the crisis fired teargas and rubber bullets at the students who were armed with sticks and rocks.

"The university cannot have a deadline on tuition yet students have never given them a deadline on service delivery," Bala said.

"As a student leader, I will fight until this policy is reversed."

Policemen are still in the monitoring the situation even as students continue to protest in small groups.
