Parents to get 6-month jail term for lying to school

A proposed amendment bill by the South African Basic Education Department has prescribed a six-month jail term parents who lie about where they live in order to get their wards in certain schools.

South African Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga

The proposal has already gained support of some education stakeholders like the CEO of the Federation of Governing Bodies (SGBs) of SA Schools, Paul Colditz.

Speaking with News24, Colditz explained that some parents lie to get their children in certain schools that they are not qualified for, thereby forcing out the qualified ones.

"This is typically one thing we would welcome," Colditz said.

"Quite often you get a situation where parents give false information about their residence... so that their child can go to a particular school.

"This forces out other children who qualify for a place in that school."

The amendment bill also proposed that the powers of school governing bodies (SGBs) be limited, especially with regards to the appointment of management staff.
