A Warri High Court has handed a death sentence to a A 22-year old student of Delta State Polytechnic, Eguono Akpeghughu, for a 2008 robbery.
22-Year-Old Student Gets Death Sentence For Foiled N36,200 Robbery
A students has been condemned to the gallows for an armed robbery attack he participated in 7 years ago
Akpeghughu, who participated in a failed 2008 robbery attack in which the victim was almost robbed of items valued at N36,200, is now to die by hanging for his crimes.
He was found guilty on a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit armed robbery and armed robbery
The offences are punishable under section 1(2)(a) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap R 11 Volume 14, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
PM news reports that it was held that the prosecution proved essential ingredients of armed robbery against the accused beyond all reasonable doubt from the totality of evidence presented before the court.
Prosecution told the court that on January 4 2008, with his accomplices, attacked a certain George Ogbemudia at Bazunu junction, Warri and relieved him of his wrist watch worth N1,200, a necklace worth N7,000, Sony Ericsson handset worth N26,000 and N2,000 cash.
He was however arrested before he could escape with his when the victim grabbed him with the help of a passerby while his accomplices escaped.
Akpeghughu, who is also suspected to be a member of an armed gang terrorizing pedestrians in the area where the crime was committed, admitted the crime in a confessional statement made while in police custody.
