The Nollywood actress Toyin Aimakhu has been mired in controversy. Does she need to slow down for the sake of her career?
Last week Nollywood actress Toyin Aimakhu, 31, posted two disturbing videos of her crying on her Instagram account. It was a really messy affair to watch.
The drama later spilled into an alleged kidnapping scenario with her new lover Seun Egbebe reportedly kidnapping her. He later denied doing this.
These 24 hours in Toyin Aimakhu’s life represents the circus that her career has been within the last year. She had a public fallout with her husband Adeniyi Johnson, re-united with him, left him again, and hooked up with movie producer Seun Egbebe. She did all these in spectacular fashion on social media. Let’s not forget that Toyin Aimakhu regularly fights with her fans online. She lives her life on Instagram.
With the turn of the year, many thought Toyin Aimakhu would chill with the drama but her private life has engulfed her career. A few are beginning to wonder if the drama won't affect her career?
With the scandals and drama, we can be forgiven in thinking that Toyin Aimakhu is no longer an actress. Hey, when was the last time she was in a popular movie? When last did she get a headline for a good movie she acted in? It’s been a while.
If Toyin Aimakhu continues this way she would end up as an actress that no one would want to touch because of her ‘wahala’ even though she is a gifted actress.
“Even offline she is a drama queen. She loves creating drama wherever she is. No doubt she’s not bad at her craft, but so many detest her attitude” says a Yoruba movie practitioner who spoke to Pulse under the condition of anonymity.
The source also questioned why she would leave Adeniyi Johnson who he describes as one of the “coolest and level headed guy in industry” for Seun Egbebe who he says is not recognized as a movie producer in the industry.
Some are however of the opinion that her online drama won’t affect her career. Chidumga Izuzu, the Senior Associate of Movie Content for Pulse believes that all the drama around Toyin Aimakhu will not hamper her career. "No, Nigerians don't care about all that as long as she continues acting" she says.
What happens when the drama is more than the talent? Actress Tonto Dikeh a few years ago was the most notorious actress in the land. Her notoriety overshadowed her career. She generated a lot of negative headlines back in her day, but since 2015 she has avoided controversy and has matured a lot.
Toyin Aimakhu can take a hint from her. If she reduces the controversy and drama in her life her talent can shine forth. If she doesn’t she will be remembered as an actress who couldn't deal with her demons. Toyin Aimakhu needs a reboot, but since nothing sells like controversy does she need to reboot?
