Nigeria’s internet space was yesterday, March 4, lit up with a variety of comments following the release of the latest ThisDay Style magazine featuring media personality, Eku Edewor and musician, Lynxxx in a shoot titled “Young, Restless & Daring.”

One particular photo, which shows a much lighter Eku being feted by young, darker skinned attendants, has become the bone of contention.

Critics say the photo endorses racism, slavery and child labour and have expressed disappointment that such an idea could emanate from an African.

Miss Edewor has put up a spirited fight and explained that the photo was meant to show a new bride being escorted to her husband’s home.

This explanation, however sincere, simply does not hold water for the following reasons:

  • Miss Edewor’s attendants are all pitch black in complexion and beside them she looks more white than mixed race.

  • The attendants are basically clad in rags and are barefoot while Miss Edewor looks resplendent. Nigerian brides are usually escorted to their husband’s homes by family members and friends. The attendants in the photo show no affinity to Miss Edewor.

  • The attendants are carrying designer bags which seem to be in stark contrast to their own way of life. The umbrella being held over Miss Edewor’s head basically destroys her argument.

  • The fact that Miss Edewor’s attendants are all children shows insensitivity to the high rate of child labour and abuse in Nigeria.

The creators of the concept might have meant no harm, but unfortunately what the public interprets will become the general opinion, in this case, not good at all.
