Norwegian and Philippine ambassador killed in helicopter crash

The military helicopter reportedly crashed during an emergency landing in the Naltar valley region.

The Norwegian and Philippine ambassadors to Pakistan, along with 4 others have been killed in a helicopter crash in the northern region of the country.

BBC reports that the wives of the Indonesian and Malaysian envoys and two Pakistan army pilots also died in the crash, while 5 others were injured including the Polish and Dutch ambassadors.

The military helicopter reportedly crashed during an emergency landing in the Naltar valley region.

The group was reportedly enroute part of the disputed Kashmir region to attend the inauguration of a chairlift project built by the air force for tourists in Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan territory.

Confirming the incident via a Twitter post, military spokesman Asim Bajwa said 11 foreigners and 6 Pakistanis were on board the MI-17 helicopter.

The Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was scheduled to inaugurate the facility, but his aircraft turned back from Gilgit after reports of the crash.

The cause of the crash is currently unknown.
