35 killed, 48 injured in New Year stampede

The chaos reportedly began after coupons that resembled dollar bills were thrown out of a third-floor window in Shanghai's waterfront area.

The New Year celebrations turned disastrous in China after a stampede claimed 35 lives and left 48 other people injured.

“I heard people screaming, someone fell, people shouted ‘don't rush’. There were so many people and I couldn't stand properly,” a witness who had been celebrating with friends said.

Many of those who got injured in the incident are currently receiving treatment at the Shanghai No. 1 People's Hospital and officials have said that investigations are still ongoing into the cause of the stampede.
