What does dog care look like after a divorce and who covers the maintenance costs?
A Spanish court in Vigo recently issued a ruling that may surprise many animal lovers - it decided that a dog that remains in the care of a former spouse is entitled to alimony, just like children.
This unprecedented situation, which is the culmination of a long-running divorce case, attracted the attention of the Spanish media. As reported by La Vanguardia, the Provincial Court of Pontevedra confirmed an earlier ruling that the dog would remain with the woman.
Despite the fact that former spouses are obliged to share the costs of maintaining the children and the dog, the court ordered the man who earns more to pay alimony.
"He will participate in the animal's expenses with the amount of €40 per month," reports the Spanish website.
Additionally, the court awarded maintenance for two children who also lived with their mother, in the amount of €150 per month.
