On Sunday, JayZ hit at critics of his Tidal music service claiming that the site is “doing just fine” and that its subscriber base is growing.
Jay Z defends app's failure on Twitter
JayZ took to his Twitter account on Saturday to defend the so far poor outing of his Tidal live streaming app.
The rapper had relaunched Tidal after purchasing the service’s parent company AspiroGroup earlier in the year for $56 million.
He told critics to give Tidal time to grow. "The iTunes Store wasn’t built in a day,” said Jay Z. “It took Spotify nine years to be successful.”
Jay Z also added that 770,000 subscribers have already signed up for Tidal, which was relaunched to compete with other streaming platforms such as Pandora and Spotify.
His tweets however, came after Tidal had dropped out of the top 500 most downloaded apps in the U.S on April 18, according to App Annie data, it fell further to No. 870 few day after. After rumors surfaced that Jay Z and wife, Beyonce, were creating an album that would be released exclusively on Tidal, the service could only manage to jump to No. 664 on the app charts.
Although Tidal is entering an already oversaturated music-streaming industry, it promoted itself as a service that delivers superior sound quality and pays artistes more than what other platforms pay. Usic on Tidal is streamed at 1411 kilobytes per second, which is close to CD quality, beating Spotify’s 96 to 320 kbps stream range.
