Jail

A military court in Thailand jailed a man for posting pictures on Facebook that were seen as insulting to the royal family of Thailand. Inside sources say the royal family does not take cases like this lightly.

The accused person -Tiensutham Suttijitseranee, a 58-year-old businessman, was tried and found guilty of posting defamatory pictures of the royal family under Thailand’s lese-majeste law.

Critics of the trial and final verdict, say the law under which the accused man was tried, is one of the harshest laws in the world. In Thailand, it is a crime to defame, insult or threaten the king, queen or heir to the throne or regent.

Sasinan Thamnithinan a lawyer, was quoted saying “The court decided that because he posted five pictures with captions last year that the court deemed defamatory, he would be sentenced to a total of 50 years; 10 years for each picture posted, reduced by half to 25 years,”
