IT Company Trains 100 Young Entrepreneurs

A Nigerian-based IT firm has revealed its plans to set up a training and mentoring program for youths in the country.

Segun Akano, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Upperlink, an indigenous Information Technology firm, has said the company is now on a mission to train and mentor 100 IT savvy entrepreneurs in Nigeria.

According to him, the development was in commemoration of the country's centenary, and also pointed out that the beneficiaries would be selected through a thorough and meticulous process in order to discover and mentor the best 100 startups.

Akano made this remark at a conference in Lagos.

He added, "As we begin the journey into another 100 years, we want to always look back to say that in the last 100 years of Nigeria, we harvested 100 young entrepreneurs who were nurtured and helped to realise their full potential."

The training, according to him, will groom them to maturity by sharpening their entrepreneurial skills. He also believes that through the programme, the country can affirm its influence in the Internet ecosystems.

He further said the exercise would, among other things, help to tackle unemployment, adding that it had the capacity to contain crime when young and talented individuals channel their expertise to profitable ventures.

The Upperlink CEO further noted that software development could be a vehicle through which the country's economic fortunes and opportunities could be harnessed.

The 100 young entrepreneurs, who would be selected in all the 36 states of the federation, Akano said, would become "lead domain sales partners," adding that the company would invest in them through "professional training and marketing skills, selling tools, take-off grant and performance bonuses."

Relishing on ICANN accreditation as the company's strength, Akano assured that the programme would transform young entrepreneurs, induce passion for ICT, create wealth and reduce unemployment.
