Huawei P8: Light in motion

The Huawei P8 itself is designed to ooze that ‘less is more’ factor. The design of the phone is simple and not at all cumbersome.

Huawei P8

The Huawei P8 smartphone is a flagship-level device launched by Chinese tech giant, Huawei, to compete in the same bracket as the Apple iPhone 6 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones. The device comes with a host of flagship-style features, inside a sleek body and minimalistic packaging.

The P8 packaging is very minimalistic, coming in a black cardboard-like open ended outer box and a rigid plastic inner box with a semi-transparent cover housing two cardboard boxes – one for the earphones, charger and USB chord, and the other for the user manual and warranty leaflet. Everything is well made, articulate and purpose-built.

The Huawei P8 itself is designed to ooze that ‘less is more’ factor. The design of the phone is simple and not at all cumbersome. On the front of the phone is the 5.2-inch screen sporting corning gorilla glass, there is no home button, with the upper part of the front housing the sensors, 8MP front facing camera, earpiece grid. The left side of the phone is bare, with a brushed metal finish, while the right side of the Huawei P8 houses the volume rocker, two slots – one for the Micro SIM, and the other for another Micro SIM and/or a MicroSD card, all in a brushed metal finish for that premium feel. At the back of the phone, the same brushed metal finish continues, with the 13MP rear-facing camera and dual LED flash sitting at the top left corner. The upper and lower parts of the back of the Huawei P8 is covering with the same corning gorilla glass as the screen, with the Huawei logo sitting in the middle at the top of the brushed metal back. At the bottom of the phone is two speaker grilles and the charging port. One of the speaker grilles houses the surround speaker while the other houses the microphone. Atop the phone is the 13mm earphone jack and a secondary mic. The phone is well built together, quality materials are used, giving the device a sturdy well-made premium feel.

The display is crisp, sharp and clear even in low light or during outdoor use. The 5.2-inch TFT FHD screen gives off vivid colors, and Huawei in-house Emotion UI makes the Huawei P8 user-friendly, easy to use, and friendly to the eye. The EMUI3.1 has been crafted to be effortless and fluid. Google keyboard comes pre-installed and the device also supports third-party keyboards, as well as Huawei’s pre-installed keyboard. The Huawei P8 sports a 2680mAh battery capable of a combined average use time of 64hours. During heavier use, that time is cut down to 16 hours.

The Huawei P8 utilizes the Android 5.0 Lollipop layered with Huawei’s Emotion User Interface (EMUI) powered by 3GB RAM, and a octacore CPU for optimum functionality. It also comes with a massive 16/64GB internal storage memory that’s expandable to 128GB.

The Huawei P8 is fitted with a front facing 8MP camera optimized to take the best possible pictures in the lowest light conditions, which gives clear fun pictures and captures all the beautiful moments you throw at it. On the rear, the Huawei P8 is equipped with a 13MP rear facing camera with AutoFocus and a host of other fun features that lets the user tweak the camera setting as it best suits them. Photos are crisp, vibrant, clear, and video don’t have blurs or distortions with light painting feature and another interesting mode called Director Mode. The Director Mode lets Huawei P8 devices connect to each other and record video.

The Huawei P8 is pre-installed with its own default browser and Google Chrome as well. Browser experience is sharp and intuitive with a proven interface that’s mobile-enthused. Other apps that come pre-installed on the phone include WPS Office, YouTube, the Director Mode app, Huawei Cloud, HiCare, Gmail, amongst others.
