Jonathan Henning says Twitter has a lot of capabilities yet untapped

Twitter strategist talks innovation, censorship and branding on the platform

Nigeria was revealed as one of five African countries with most active Twitter users in the ‘How Africa Tweets’ research by Portland communications in Kenya in 2012.

Jonathan Henning is a Creative Brand Strategist at Twitter. He recently spoke at the Access Conference 2015 on the topic: "How can social media help elect a president?" alongside media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo.

Pulse Nigeria spoke to him about how effectively Nigerians were using Twitter to tell their stories.

“It is such a robust platform with so many capabilities, however, most people are using it in a way which is less conversational than it should be and less image based than it probably should be”, Henning said.

“I’d say there’s probably a lot of room for improvement everywhere not just Nigeria”.

He also addressed Twitters views on censorship and nudity.

“Twitter is all about Freedom of expression. So if it’s nudity, although we wouldn’t necessary condone some forms of nudity, we’re about providing free speech, providing a platform for free speech to the world”.

He also shared how brands could create on the social media platform.

“Know your audience, know what you are selling”, he advised.
