Buhari names federal university after late politician

President Buhari has renamed a federal university after the late Dr Alex Ekwueme.

Osinbajo made the declaration during the funeral service for the late Dr Alex Ekwueme who was Nigeria’s first elected Vice President from 1979 to 1983.

Osinbajo was official Chief Mourner of the Ekwueme transition.

'Distinguished gentleman'

Nigeria’s Vice President who spoke briefly at the funeral said;“we honour the memory of a truly distinguished gentleman of Nigeria's politics for more than three decades.

"When Ekwueme was asked what his vision was for the country, he said, I would like to see Nigeria be a nation not just a country." This week, a grateful nation celebrates the memory of a great man”.

Ministers, Senators, Governors, a strong federal government delegation and dignitaries from all walks of life, were in Anambra to pay their last respects to Ekwueme who died aged 85.

Ekwueme was Alhaji Shehu Shagari’s deputy in those years.

He played a pivotal role in the birth of Nigeria's fourth republic. Ekwueme was a part of the G34 which became the fulcrum of the PDP in 1999.

He died in a London health facility following health complications, on November 20, 2017.
