Housing minister reveals plans to build 1 million homes for the poor

The housing minister of Egypt, Mustafa Madbouly, announced plans to build 1 million homes for the poor in Cairo.

The housing minister of Egypt, Mustafa Madbouly, announced plans to build 1 million homes for the poor in Cairo.

According to him, 500,000 or 600,000 people need new homes a year, with poor people in slums making up 70%.

“So many people live in a network of tombs in Cairo that the area has become known as the City of the Dead. The social housing project will see 200,000 new homes built each year, meeting over half the annual demand for cheap housing. We are upgrading slums and unsafe areas. We are talking here about 248 areas and150, 000 families."

He also revealed the country's plan to build houses for middle class citizens.

"Private developers, who have built new suburbs around Cairo, are meeting the needs of middle and higher income Egyptians who can buy homes outright or obtain mortgages.”
