The Federal Road Safety Corps sector in Oyo state has started using speed limiting devices.

Oyo state

On the 1st of September, the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) initiated the use of speed limiting devices in Nigeria in order to prevent crashes.

Last week, the FRSC Sector Commander of Oyo state, Mr Yusuf Salami, announced that the use of speed limiting devices has begun, adding that any commercial vehicle without the speed limiter would be deemed to be "mechanically deficient.’’

"If they do not meet up and do what is expected of them, it means that their vehicles are mechanically deficient. Defaulters will be taken up on that basis.”

Since the speed limiting devices were initiated to prevent road crashes, Mr Salami went on to advise tanker drivers to get a  the necessary safety valve as this will prevent spillage, thereby reducing the chances of an accident.

"We are still educating tanker drivers and managements of petroleum depots on the need for the drivers to acquire safety valves. It will protect the lives of the tanker drivers and other citizens. This device will help control oil spills should an accident occur. The corps will not spare any driver who violates traffic rules. We are also using this opportunity to warn drivers against driving recklessly during the "ember" months of September, October, November and December because most of them tend to do so this period.’’
