These high-fiber banana chocolate chip muffins are a breakfast must-try
They're so good, you won't even know they're whole grain.
But lots of muffins sold at bakeries come packed with sugar and starch—leading to a quick flash of energy that will make you crash shortly afterwards.
That's why we can't get enough of this healthy muffin recipe. It creates basically a bite-size version of banana bread. Packed with whole grains (bran, flaxseed, whole-wheat flour, and wheat germ), each muffin also contains three grams of protein and 10 percent of your daily value of fiber. Plus, the chocolate chips and banana inside each muffin help mask any lingering "healthy" tastes—making it a wonderfully indulgent, yet nutritious choice.
One thing to note on this muffins recipe: It calls for Sucanat sweetener, which is short for "Sugar Cane Natural." This sweetener is essentially dehydrated sugar cane juice, according to TIME.
Sucanat is a much less processed alternative to traditional sugars, with a similar flavor. You can substitute it one for one in recipes with sugar, but it works best in recipes where you'd be using brown sugar, like brownies, cookies, and other baked goods, according to The Kitchen. (You can buy sucanat on Amazon and at the organic baking section of the grocery store).
