Check out our alté guide to Lagos

Lagos is one of the few cities in Nigeria where youths feel very free to express themselves. If you fall into the alté category, check this out.

According to Urban Dictionary, alté "means alternative. A group of Nigerian youth who are ahead of the street wear/fashion and music scene in Nigeria. Typically known by their different fashion and alternative music. They usually mingle with people with similar interests to avoid snide remarks about their choices."

Even though alté is slowly becoming a snide remark, people are keen to know what these alté cool kids are up to and where they're hanging out.

1. Afropolitan vibes and others

In Lagos, Alté kids can be found at alternative music festivals like Afropolitan vibes, 90s baby, Lemon Curd, Gidi Fest, Palmwine fest, etc.

2. Pop-up events

A pop-up shop is a temporary storefront space operated by an online merchant. Nigerian vendors have recently jumped on the pop-up shop trend and so have Alté kids. They are mostly present for the sale of high-end merchandise.

3. Mainland block party

The mainland block party in Ikeja every month is a good place to meet and interact with alté kids.

Apparently, a lot of cool and alté people live at this estate, so events are organised around and in the area. You can often time find a group of them hanging out around prime water gardens.

6. Chilling at Tarkwa bay

Tarkwa bay allow people express themselves through surfing, cruising and chilling on a yacht. Alté kids like to hang out here too.

7. Barbar

Barbar in Lekki is a popular location for cool kids to hang out because of its unique value proposition of having a barbing salon and a bar.

8. Celebrating Felabration... but on the island

Because creatives and cool kids like to brag about their love for Fela (understandable), they like to celebrate Felabration, but at the Shrine like everyone else.

9. Events at odd locations

Any event at odd locations, like in the middle of the road or at an abandoned train station, draws Alté kids in flocks, especially Jameson events.

10. Events at parks

Freedom park and Muri Okunola park are famous for bringing Alté kids together for events such as Socialiga, Eat Drink Lagos Festival, and others like that.
