Food Abuse: What's Nutrition Got To Do With It?

Kofo was a svelte young lady of 22. Slim, fair and pretty she was just 60kg and in her estimation very healthy. One morning she woke up with numb fingers. A quick check-up with the doctor revealed that her cholesterol level was sky high. In his words, “Young lady, I'm not sure how you walked in here. Anyone with your cholesterol level should have been dead!”

The hectic pace of life in Lagos is legendary. People feel like they have little or no time for basic things like regular check ups, and people wind up getting sick in ways that could easily be avoided. Others try and compensate for bad habits by spending money on so-called healthcare products such as skincare potions when they could achieve better results through natural means. Skin problems, weight issues and general appearance can easily be handled with your diet and nutrition, and check ups for cholesterol level, body-sugar level, and general body functions are critical to maintaining good health and avoiding problems.

As the woman in the above example demonstrates, just guessing at—and hoping for—good health is not enough.

Let's start with your diet. The word 'diet' has been misconstrued to mean 'a plan to lose weight.' What it really means, however, is carefully monitored eating habits or a carefully prescribed selection of foods for better health. There are all kinds of different diets—to lose weight, add weight, lower cholesterol or improve skin health, to name a few. According to health and beauty expert Princess Kathy Emiko, author of 100 Key Facts to Longer Life, your nutrition has everything to do with how you function daily. If you wake up tired, can't climb a flight of stairs without feeling breathless, or start to notice that your skin is patched or blotchy, then your body is giving you signs that you need to work on your diet.

Skimp on fruits and vegetables for instance and you're opening yourself to the risk of weakened cells and avoidable illness. Carefully monitoring your diet makes a big difference in staying healthy. If you need help making sure you reach at least the daily minimum of fruits and veggies, try adding a glass of the healthy Smoothielicious that contains the recommended daily helping of fruits and veggies in one cup.

To start a healthy diet, you need to go for a check up with your doctor. You should also calculate your BMI (Body Mass Index). This will let you know whether you are in a good place, weight-wise. Princess Emiko says this will determine your eating habits going forward. Ask your doctor what nutritional guidelines he or she recommends to address particular concerns you might have. Then proceed to create a table of meals that will work with your new diet plan. You'll be amazed how easy it can be to improve your eating habits once you've informed yourself about the basics of good nutrition. You'll be even more amazed how much better you'll look and feel! Good luck as you start your healthy eating journey.
