Ghana agency destroys Nigerian political parties billboards

Ghanaian authorities have ordered the removal of political billboards by Nigerian political parties from their street for fears of Boko haram attack.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly, AMA, has destroyed political billboards erected in that country by leading political parties in Nigeria, citing fears of attacks by the dreaded Islamic insurgent sect, Boo Haram.

In the run up to the 2015 presidential elections in the country, major political parties, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the All Progressive Congress, APC, had taken advantage of the large amount of Nigerians in Ghana to take their campaigns there, posting their posters and erecting billboards in major streets, while urging Nigerians to come back home to vote during the elections.

But the Ghanaian authorities would not have any of that as the AMA took it upon themselves to destroy the billboards because they do not want to incur the wrath of the Boko Haram.

Justifying their actions, the AMA says the demolition process was in line with the orders of National Security, tasking them to remove all the Nigerian campaign posters sighted in Accra.

But insiders believe that the reason for removing of the billboards has nothing to do with Boko Haram as the Ghanaian authorities are just playing safe and do not want to enter into the bad books of any party that wins the election.

They do not want to be seen as partisan  by allowing the parties to campaign in their country.
