Extend TETFund to private universities — FUTMINNA VC

Prof. Musbau Akanji of FUTMINNA has urged the Federal Government to allow private universities benefit for TETFund which he says can transform the education sector.

Private universities should be allowed to benefit from the Tertiary Education Fund (TETFUND) which is strictly for public institutions at the moment, says the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA), Prof. Musbau Akanji.

The Professor made the appeal while addressing newsmen at a ceremony to mark the 10th year anniversary of Al-Hikmah University Ilorin.

He urged the government to extend the initiative to private universities, adding that it will help transform the education sector.

"With the type of injection of funds that the federal government made available to public universities, if sustained, it is likely that the advancement of education will be assured," he said.

Akanji, the pioneer Vice Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, was honoured alongside other dignitaries at the occasion.

It will be recalled that the Executive Secretary of the TETFUND, Professor Sulaiman Bogoro, in early January ruled out any support for private universities under the agency.

He argued that these privately owned institutions charge excessive fees that poor Nigerians can't afford.
