It is very rare to see a father asking a court to sentence his own child to death, but the father of a 21-year-old college student wants the death sentence for his son's "unforgivable" crime.
"He Should Be Sentenced To Death" — Father Of 21-Year-Old Killer Student
Cheng Chieh attacked innocent passengers with a knife, killing 4 and critically injuring 22... his father is among those seeking a death sentence for him
The student, Cheng Chieh, had on May 21 attacked passengers on on the Taipei subway with a 4-inches-long knife, killing four people and injuring over twenty others.
Chieh was arrested after the attack.
He has been charged with 4 counts of murder and 22 counts of attempted murder and prosecutors now seek the death penalty for him.
"The accused's actions fit the definition of mass murders, his means were ruthless and inhuman, and caused irreparable harm to the victims and their families. We demand the court sentence him to death," prosecutors said in a statement quoted in a report.
My Son Deserves To Die
Taiwan is known for its low crime rates which may be the reason why most are still shocked by Chieh's stabbing spree months after.
It is therefore not surprising that the call for a death sentence is coming not only from the prosecutors, but also his own family, his own parents.
"Although he is our child, the crime he committed is unforgivable.
"I think he should be sentenced to death... he should face it himself.
"Only by so doing may the pains inflicted on the victims and the wounded and their families be slightly eased," Cheng's father was quoted as saying after the attack.
Though some reports said Chieh was drunk when he committed the crime, the prosecutors say psychological evaluations show that he was mentally stable at the time.
