The deaths shocked Hong Kong, a city which has a reputation for safety, and highlighted the difficulties faced by migrant workers.

The victims were among the over 300,000 female domestic migrant workers that are employed throughout the city as maids, although at the time of their deaths they were not working as such.

The judge warned that gruesome images would be presented as evidence during the trial, which is scheduled to continue until Nov. 11.
