A possible attack on "one or two churches" in France has been circumvented as police have arrested a man suspected of planning a terrorist attack.

The suspect, who is believed to have lived in France for several years, was detained on Sunday after he apparently shot himself by accident and called for an ambulance.

According to French Interior Minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, police followed a trail of blood leading to his vehicle, where they found notes "unambiguously demonstrating" he planned an imminent attack.

In addition to the notes, "several war weapons, hand guns, ammunition, bullet-proof vests, computer and telephone hardware" were discovered at his car and home.

BBC reports that the suspect who is a 24-year old Algerian national, was known to security services as having expressed a wish to travel to Syria.

The authorities had carried out security checks on the suspect twice over the past couple of years but did not uncover anything to justify further investigation.

Meanwhile, it is also suspected that the Computer Science student is behind the murder of a 32-year old woman found dead near Paris, although it is not known yet what link the man has to her.

The deceased was reportedly visiting the Paris area to attend a training course when passers-by discovered her body as smoke poured out of the car from an overheating laptop.

French security have however said that as of now, there is no immediate evidence the suspect had links to organised groups
