Delhi High Court directs IM platform to delete user information from server

Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal of the Delhi High Court insist that Whatsapp delete user data gathered before September 25, 2016.

Facebook owns WhatsApp.

According to the Indian Express, Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal feel that users who do not want their data to be shared on Facebook can opt for account deletion.

Based on a new policy expected to begin on Sunday, September 25, Whatsapp will have the right to share information of its user on Facebook.

The move instructing Whatsapp to delete the data of its users before the policy initiation date was instigated by two students from the Imperial College, London, who felt it “severely compromises the rights of its users and makes the privacy rights of users completely vulnerable”, Indian Express reports.

According to the high court, “If users opt for deleting the WhatsApp account before 25/09/2016 the information/data/details of such users should be deleted completely from WhatsApp servers and the same shall not be shared with Facebook or any group companies."

The change in privacy policy came after social media giant, Facebook acquired the instant messaging platform.
