Lookout Mobile Security Launches The "Theftie" Feature On Android

On Android devices, theftie will signal front-facing cameras to snap photos in the hope of capturing images of culprits...

Lookout Mobile Security just introduced a feature called "theftie" which is basically a theft alert function.

This feature enables phone owners tell smartphones to give theft alerts if anyone toys with the  lock-screen code, turns the phone off, pulls a SIM card, or puts the device in 'airplane' mode to block network connections.

"We are not providing this information for you to go out and find the device yourself," Lookout product manager Greg Lou told AFP. "It is so you can give it to the police so they can find it for you."

According to Lou, this feature isn't on Apple but just Android because Apple's Operating System will not allow it.

When triggered, emails that include the map or location of the phone, and possibly the picture of the person fiddling with the phone is sent to the phone user to be able to locate the smartphone.

"Phone theft is becoming a really big problem," Lou said.

We really hope this reduces smartphone theft.
