Youth counsellor raises concern over TV programmes on same sex relationships

A Youth Counsellor, Prof. Solomon Omayaiwa, on Tuesday in Abuja, raised concern over the increased cartoon programmes depicting same sex relationships on some television networks.

Omayaiwa who is also the proprietor of Doxa Institute of Theology, Nigeria, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that such programmes “ are subtle campaigns disguised in forms of cartoons to capture the minds of children.’’

According to him, cartoons such as “The Loud House’’, being shown on Nickelodeon, aired a gay married couple while “The Legend of Korra also showed a same sex romance.

He said in Disney Channel’s children’s series “Good Luck Charlie’’a lesbian couple was portrayed bringing their child over for a play date, while “The Simpsons’’, “Crapston Villas’’ have all portrayed gay and lesbianism.

Others are: Dexter’s Laboratory, Hey Arnold!, South Park, Archer, Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, Rick and Morty, Steven Universe , Star vs. the Forces of Evil among others.

Omayaiwa said in 2016,the directors of Disney’s `Moana’ predicted a future Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) princess and also planned to remark `Beauty and the beast’ with a gay storyline.

He said that speculation over gay and transgender characters had also included last year’s “Zootopia’’, “Finding Dory’, and 2013’s Frozen.

“It is clear that we need to be vigilant about the entertainment platforms our children are accustomed to; be it the television, movie, music, video or books as parents.

“ In respect to these cartoons that have Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) messages for children, I would say that these are materials sent out to distort the future of our next generation therefore they should not be allowed.

“When their minds are corrupted with such messages, we will have a generation that is full of decadence leading to the issue of youth’s restiveness and sexual promiscuity all over the society.

“I am appealing to all media regulatory bodies to stall the projection of such films,” he said.

Omayaiwa, said that Nigeria, a nation given to secularism should not be found wanting in allowing LGBT campaigns on its airwaves adding that “our culture does not allow it ‘’.

He also appealed to Mr Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture and his Communication counterpart, Mr Adebayo Shittu, to ensure that such things were not being encouraged in the nation.

Omayaiwa further appealed to the National Assembly to come up with policies that would militate against the infiltration of LGBT messages in the country in order to safeguard the minds of the youths.
