British car giant developing 'Pothole Alert' technology

The system uses a stereo camera to scan the road surface for imperfections like potholes, raised manholes, and broken drain covers.

Land Rover's Pothole alert system

Reports say Land Rover is developing a latest technology. It's called (simply enough) b, and it's being tested on the Range Rover Evoque.

Sources say the system uses a stereo camera to scan the road surface for imperfections like potholes, raised manholes, and broken drain covers.

It can then signal the magnetorheological suspension to prepare in a split second for the impending bump, and in the future may even be able to steer the vehicle around the obstacle or slow it for impact – just like a driver would do, but likely with a higher level of efficacy and safety.

According to reports, Land Rover isn't limiting itself to the confines of its own vehicles. It's also designing the system to alert other vehicles on the road of the hazard, and even alert local authorities of what needs to be fixed.

Furthermore,to that end the automaker is collaborating with the city of Coventry, UK, as part of its smart-city strategy to see how the geo-tagged, real-time information can help it address road conditions more swiftly.

Sources also reveal that the Pothole Alert system is just the latest technology which Jaguar Land Rover has demonstrated recently, following such advancements as the Bike Sense system fitted to the XJ, the Transparent Bonnet on the Discovery Vision concept, the Smart Assistant demonstrated on the Range Rover Sport, and the Virtual Windscreen showcased on the F-Type.
