Human rights activist calls for persecution of professionals

In light of the increase in collapsed buildings, prominent Lawyer and human rights activist, Mr Femi Falana, has demanded for the persecution of professionals who cut corners in building construction.

Collapsed building in Nigeria

Mr Femi Falana, a prominent Lawyer and human rights activist, is tired of professionals who cut corners in building construction as this leads to collapsed building, loss of lives and properties.

According to Vanguard, he made this appeal at the 7th Annual Distinguished Lecture organised by the Lagos branch of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, NIQS.

His argument is that bad professionals that cut corners should be made to face the consequence before the law(jailed)rather than just being sanctioned, he added that foreigners who practise as quantity surveyors without registering with the regulatory body, should also be jailed.

Speaking on the topic “Leadership, Socio-Economic Impasse and Shortage of Infrastructural Development in Nigeria”, the human rights activist urged the surveyors to “take control and rid yourselves of quacks who destroy the integrity of your profession before members of the public”.

He went on to criticize the privatization of assets in Nigeria, describing it as “the transfer of public assets into private hands without the buyers paying for it”.

According to Mr Femi, it is only in Nigeria that people buy government property, sell part of it and use the proceeds to pay for that asset.

Moving forward, he noted that only sacrifice and commitment to the rule of law could rebuild the country’s decaying infrastructure.
