'I Am Jazz' Season 6 Premiere Shows Jazz Jennings Undergoing Corrective Surgery On Clitoris

Season six of TLCs I Am Jazz starts out in a familiar place: LGBTQ+ activist Jazz Jennings and her family are preparing for a life-changing surgery.

'I Am Jazz' Season 6 Is Here

This will be the third in Jazzs , and, while everyone is hoping this will be the last, the serious complications that Jazz experienced after her first surgery are at the front of everyones minds as Jazz and her doctors walk back to the operating theater in Tuesdays premiere on TLC.

Im hoping for a noneventful, positive surgery, where Jazz comes out, and the doctors say everything went exactly as planned, and they dont have any buts along the way, her dad, Greg, says as he, her mom, Jeanette, and brother Sander wait for updates on the procedure.

And Jazz lives happily ever after, Jeannette is quick to add.

The outspoken 19-year-old is the star of I Am Jazz, but her supportive and loving family also deserve some of the credit for giving the show so much heart. This weeks episode opens with a Jennings celebration fit for a season premierea beachside 21st birthday party for twin brothers Sander and Griffen.

Over lemon drop shots (although none for Jazz), the Jennings discuss the milestones theyll each experience this year, including the boys birthday, Jazzs sister, Ari, beginning a new masters program, and Jazz making a decision about where shell go to college (its down to Pomona and Harvard FYI, but stay off Jazz's Instagram if you don't want any spoilers) and, of course, her upcoming surgery.

This time, the procedure will be focused mainly on aesthetic reconstruction Jazz tells her friend, Kaci, in a later scene, including lowering her clitoris by a few inches because right now, its more like a second belly button.

I wanted it to be a one-and-done procedure, and Ive had two surgeries already, and this is going to be the third, she says in the episode. But Im accepting it for what it is.

But the Jennings trip to New York City isnt all doctors appointments and surgeries. After an afternoon spent at the Museum of Sex with Sander, Jazz and her family head to the premiere of Denim, a short film in which Jazz stars as a high schooler who is outed as transgender by a school rival who takes a photo of her in the bathroom.

Theres a lot of discussion in society about the use of bathrooms and things like that, but its not just that, Greg says about the film. Its really just about people being allowed to be who they are. I dont know why thats such a hard concept.

Today the film DENIM, that I star in, is available on Amazon Prime! DENIM is about the importance of treating transgender people equally, and how outing someone can change their life, and bullying someone can ruin a life. The next time viewers see Jazz, its 5:15 a.m. and shes prepping for the next step on her journey to do just that. At the hospital, Jazz and her family are greeted by her surgeons, Marci Bowers, MD, and Jess Ting, MD. The day before, Jazz, her family and her doctors spent most of her consultation discussing the issues they had worked through in her previous surgeries.

This has been a real journey, hasnt it? We knew it would be toughit turned out tougher than any of us imagined, Bowers told Jazz's family. I think in hindsight we would have never sent you home from the hospital. You know, easy to say now. When I wasnt here when you had problems and had to go back, I cant tell you how stressful that was.

But this morning, everyone is cautiously optimistic. Jazz says shes not as nervous as she was the first time, but also jokes to her parents in the taxi over to the hospital that she doesnt have to do anything besides fall asleep.

Im on pins and needles, watching the clock and wondering whats going on, Jeannette says as the family waits for news in Jazzs hospital room. I wont lie, in the back of my head, is still that safety net of being prepared for something to go weird. Im trying to push it away because I want that positive energy, and I want that surrounding Jazz, but Ive been burned before.

After a little over four hours of surgeryand a slight disagreement in the OR between Ting and Bowers over the removal of some scarringthe two doctors have an update for the family. Overall, theyre happy with what they were able to accomplish. Some of Jazzs old scars have been removed, and they were able to recenter the clitoris, without any damage to the nerves. However, they have some news that no one was expecting to hear: Theres the possibility that Jazz might need another, a fourth, surgery to create a labia minora.

The announcement leaves the family shocked as Jeannette says, but theyre told they can visit Jazz and theyre excited to see her in her clowning stage as she comes out of her anesthesia. But, her parents quickly realize that something about Jazz is off. Her mom asks if shes in pain, and Sander flags down a nurse as his sister starts to hyperventilate. The tension in the hospital room heightens as the screen fades to black and viewers are slapped with a big, old To be continued.
