The group was comprised of Brie Larson's Captain Marvel, Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch, Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts, Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie, and Danai Gurira's Okoye. You may have noticed: All of these heroes are female. In a new interview with Variety , Larson made it clear that she wants this moment, and the idea of a female Marvel hero team-up, to be more than just a one-off scene.
"I will say that a lot of the female cast members from Marvel walked up to [Marvel Chief Kevin Feige] and we were like, We are in this together, we want to do this, she said. What that means, I have no idea. You know, Im not in charge of the future of Marvel, but it is something that were really passionate about and we love and I feel like if enough people out in the world talk about how much they want it, maybe itll happen.
After lacking a main female protagonist for the first 20 films in its universe, two out of the MCU's last three solo outings will have been female-focused by the time Black Widow is released next May. The first of those, of course, was Larson's solo turn as the titular Captain Marvel in last March's hit, which grossed over a billion dollars worldwide.
We know that Marvel is focused on telling female-focused stories going forward, even in franchises where that previously wasn't always necessary at the forefront; at San Diego Comic Con, Feige announced that Natalie Portman would be returning to the Thor franchise , alongside Chris Hemsworth and Thompson, to play the 'Female Thor' from a much-loved comics arc . There have also been announcements surrounding a Scarlet Witch-centered series on Disney+ called WandaVision that Olsen will be a part of, along with a She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel series as well. From the sounds of Larson's comments, it sounds like what she and several of her fellow female MCU co-stars were pushing for would be an Avengers-esque, all-female team-up film; if the talent was all on-board, meaning Larson would be joined by Thompson, Portman, Paltrow, Olsen, and more, and maybe villains like Cate Blanchett (Thor: Ragnarok) return? That sounds like a movie worth making.
