Music expert describes language as poetic

A former university lecturer has described the Yoruba language as very poetic and lyrical.

Dr. Babalola said this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, September 3, 2016.

He also talked about the growth of the music industry in Africa and Nigeria, mentioning the achievements of some successful Yoruba musicians.

The retiree said that in terms of diction and expression, Yoruba language "remains the richest in content," leading to global acceptance of Yoruba music legends.

The former music teacher mentioned King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, Victor Olaiya amongst others, saying that they have made a name and carved a niche for themselves worldwide in their craft through the success of different Yoruba music genres.

He also said that the beautiful poetic properties of Yoruba language has made millions of non-Yoruba fans home and abroad enjoy music sung in Yoruba.

Dr. Babalola also noted that more than any other African language, the Yoruba language has been used widely in the composition of hip-hop.

"The users of Yoruba language, experts and researchers alike, should explore these prospects to advance the coast of the language, especially in the entertainment world," he said.
