The Senators in question, including eight from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have signed a document to show their support for the impeachment notice against the president, Punch reports.
One of the legislators, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), reportedly told Punch that the plans to remove Jonathan were stemmed from his handling of the economic and political affairs of the country, a high level of corruption and “gross disregard” of the legislature.
“We know and we are prepared to show the President that we have responsibility to the people and the nation in general. We are prepared to lay the impeachment notice anytime from next week. Meetings are already being held,” the Senator said.
Senator Ibrahim Musa from Niger North said concerning the proposed impeachment:
“I think there is something like that but I don’t have the details, it is still coming as a rumour.”
The House of Representatives had earlier said that it had compiled a list of 50 constitutional violations for which President Jonathan could be impeached.
