Crime detectives ponder on killing of Akure chief
The assailants reportedly scaled through the fence of the man's residence and killed him in his room. A family member suggested that it was a well planned attack.
Oyateru was killed in the presence of one of his wives, Titilola, at his residence in the Oke-Ijebu area of the state, according to Vanguard.
According to reports, three gunmen stormed his home in Akure, tied the security guard and strangled the chief.
There are suggestions that the murder might have been pre-meditated, because the killers won’t have been able to locate the victim’s bedroom if it was not.
This is according to a family source whose identity was not revealed in the news report.
Titilola, who was with the deceased when the attack occurred explained that the incident was a shocking one that has left scarred memories.
Narrating the horrible experience, she said, “They entered the house through my husband’s room after cutting the burglary proof and held us hostage for about four hours,”
“They pointed gun at baba, demanding for ‘the money which he brought home last night’.”
“He pleaded with them that he didn’t have any money at home and usually didn’t keep money at home, but they refused to yield to his begging, threatening that they would kill us if we didn’t give them money.”
“He begged them not to kill him, imploring them to go with his two cars; and promised to go to the bank to withdraw money from his bank account for them but they refused.”
“Baba begged them to name a point within or outside the town where they wanted him to drop the money for them the following morning if they could not take him to the ATM machine that early morning but they insisted that they would kill him if he didn’t give them money at that particular time.”
“They tied him with rope and asked us to lie down with our faces to the ground after which they pounced on him and strangled him.”
Femi Joseph, a spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, said investigations are ongoing into the murder of the chief.
He gave an assurance that the murder suspects, who are still at large, will be arrested.
