'My in-laws want to sell their daughter to me'

Would you spend millions just to get married to a woman from a particular tribe in Nigeria?

A confused man needs advice

The way they are going about it, one would think a millionaire is coming to marry their daughter and not a struggling young man, not even taking the situation in the country into consideration.

I met two years ago when I went to the bank she works to transact some business. She was so helpful and at the end of the day, she became my account officer. From that business relationship, we began dating and after one year, we decided to get married.

In fact, she was the one angled for the marriage since, at 33, she felt age was telling on her and her chances of having her own children was waning.

My family too liked her and my mother too was on my neck to get married as I am not getting younger. But the first sign of trouble reared its head when I went to see her family. They were not really happy with what I went with as they expected something grander, forgetting that I was only coming to know them.

After making my intention known over a period of time, they invited me and some members of my family to come for the traditional marriage list. When we got it, I knew I was in for a shocker because the list was as long as the Third Mainland Bridge.

What they demanded for was so outlandish and out of this world that it seemed they wanted me to buy their daughter. The list came in four parts with mundane things that no sane family should demand from a son-in-law, but my fiancee's family are insisting I provide them if I am serious about marrying their daughter.

Can you imagine that after a careful calculation, we found out that the things on the list would set me back a whopping N2.2 million. That is just for the traditional marriage alone.

Aside that, they are also demanding an elaborate white wedding and from their point of view, I will end up spending nothing less than N4 million just to get married.

I cannot afford such an outrageous spending and even if I have so much money, I think it is rather wasteful to spend so much on a marriage, after all, I will still have to take care of my family.

My family is insisting they will never allow me to spend such an amount to get married and have advised I look for another woman, especially from my town and get married.

I love Chidinma and would want to marry her but her family are not making things easy for me.

What do I do?

Emeka."

Dear readers, on Morning Teaser today, we want you to advice Emeka on what to do. Should he go ahead and spend that much to marry Chidinma or look for another woman?
