Court dissolves 8-year-old marriage over wife's adulterous act

A Mapo Customary Court, Ibadan, on Friday dissolved an eight- year-old marriage, between one Francis Akande and his wife, Mary, over her adulterous act.

The Judge, Mr Ademola Odunade, who dissolved the marriage, said that an adulterous spouse certainly posed danger to the survival of any relationship, hence, the need for the separation.

"Since Akande is capable of catering for his children, the court shall not deny him custody of them. Therefore, the court puts an end to the husband and wife relationship between both of you in the interest of peaceful coexistence,” he said.

In his statement, Akande said that his wife was an unrepentant adulterous person, in spite of the fact that he gave her everything she needed.

"Mary usually lies to me that she was going to the church for vigil, which made me to be suspicious of her intention; especially as she never allowed any of the children to follow her.

"This went on for a long time until neighbours informed me of her escapades. I did all the necessary investigation and I caught her red-handed after which she told me that I could go to hell.

"Mary said that, if I was not comfortable, I could do whatever pleases me. I am most astonished because even after seven children; two sets of twins included , Mary could still venture into prostitution.

“Despite my physical disability, I have tried everything possible to make her happy by labouring very hard,” Akande stressed. However, Mary, who did not deny the allegation, accepted the divorce.

"Akande can divorce me; but I will not allow him to go with any of the children because he would not take adequate care of them,” Mary stated.
