'Help: my husband wants to initiate our only son in a cult'

Chinenye had gone through a lot to have her only son after four girls but now, her husband wants to initiate the child into their village cult.

This worried woman needs your advice (Illustration)

They accused me of giving them only girls who would be married off and put so much pressure on me to give them a son. In fact, it got a point when my in-laws had perfected plans to marry a new wife for me if I could not bear a son.

They made it seem as if I was the one who deliberately refused to have a male child. All my explanations that it is what the man puts in me that I will bring forth fell on deaf ears.

My husband himself was never a happy man as he kept telling me that his friends made a mockery of him with some calling him an incomplete man because he could not father a son.

I knew I was in serious trouble because, despite the fact the family was a staunch Catholic family, they were so much steeped in their tradition and did not joke with their lineage. I knew they would carry out their threat of getting a wife for my husband.

I prayed, fasted, called on God to intervene and in His good time, God answered my prayers and I gave birth to a son whom we named Ebubechukwu to thank God for his kindness.

That was when I knew that I had been missing my husband's love and care as Emenike changed and became the most loving husband and father I had ever seen.

The coming of Ebubechukwu marked a turning point in our family as Emenike made sure we lacked nothing money could provide. He bought me a new car, changed my wardrobe, gave me extra money to stock my shop and even took the family to Ghana for a vacation.

But the problem I have now is that Emenike has concluded plans to in a cult in their community though he told me it is not a cult initiation.

He told me that all male children from their community must be initiated into the society to show that they are indigenes and true sons of the community.

But I know it is a sort of cult initiation especially with the rites involved in the initiation. I fear for my son and I have tried all I could to dissuade Emenike but he keeps telling me that pour son would not live beyond his fifth birthday without the long-standing initiation.

How do I stop Emenike from initiating my only son in his village cult?

Chinenye."
