Confessions of a big-booty chick

I remember going to my mom's tailor for a fitting and hearing her scream “You have hips o!" when she took my measurements

However I was ignorant of the true power of my endowment at the time; I actually thought all those nice boys liked me for my beautiful soul.

I was safe in my naïveté until I got into university and was nicknamed “hips don't lie" by my hall mates. That was when I started to notice the stares and the lip licking and the perverse smiles from men (and women) around me.

I came to the full realization of the power of my booty when one day my father's Pastor friend was walking behind me and suddenly gave me a large smack, on my backside, the backside of his friend's daughter right inside his friend's house.

I didn't tell my father though because someone would have died and it definitely wouldn’t have been Femi Sotubo (Snr).

This is one experience out of many. I’ve had people refer to my butt like it was a person and I’ve had to deal with unsavoury comments for a large part of my life.

So what’s my confession? Big butts are overrated.

I look around the world now and see what the desperation to have generous backsides has led women to and I’m both amused and saddened by it.

The Kim Kardashians and Nicki Minajs of this world have led women to believe that they are worth nothing without a big booty and unfortunately this belief has led to the deaths of several women.

24-year-old British-Nigerian, Joy Williams died in October 2014 after going through a cheap butt enhancement procedure in Thailand.

This was also the fate of aspiring dancer, Claudia Aderotimi, a 20-year-old British student who thought a bigger butt would guarantee her fame as a hip hop star.

Frankly speaking, having a big butt is more of a disadvantage than an advantage and most of all, it guarantees nothing.

A big butt will get you unwanted stares, snide comments, “accidental touches” and sometimes sexual assault.

A big butt will not get you love, it won’t get you respect or success or any other useful thing for that matter. Even if you want to use the butt to get money, you’d have to really “use” it.

A big butt is just a mound of flesh in the right place that helps your clothes sit right.

So maybe you’ll say I’m only thinking this way because I’m naturally endowed but the truth is, my butt has gotten me nothing. Everything I have now, I’ve had to work for.

My point is, your worth is not determined by what is at your back but by what you aspire to and work for.

So in this age of waist trainers and butt injections and the like, women need to step aside and figure out what’s truly important.

It’s time to focus on the real gifts that you have and do all you can to build them and make them better instead of wasting time trying to increase your behind.

Big butts are great but they’re definitely not worth dying for.
