58-yr-old driver docked for raping 11-yr-old girl

A 58-year-old driver who raped an 11-year-old girl could face life in prison if found guilty.

Emmanuel Egejuru, a 58-year-old driver in Lagos State, has been charged before an Ikeja High Court for allegedly defiling an 11-year-old girl.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that the accused, a father of five who resides at No. 10, Mutiu Street, Ipaja area of the state, had accosted the girl who lives with her guardian in the same compound, in the toilet and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her, an offence, which, according to the prosecutor, Mosunmola Balogun, is contrary to Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, and the law prescribes life imprisonment for anyone found guilty of the offence of defilement.

“He over powered the child and had unlawful sexual intercourse with her in the toilet," the prosecutor said.

When the charge was read to him however, the accused pleaded not guilty and presiding judge, Justice Sedotan Ogunsanya, granted him bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum, while adjourning the case till March 23 for trial.
