The hit show Atlanta can easily be about three friends trying to make sense out of this madness called Nigeria.

This is the golden age of TV shows in America.

From 2005, when 'Prison Break' came to us in blank CDs from our friends who had access to the Internet or street vendors peddling Hollywood movies we have been addicts of American TV shows.

'Game of Thrones', 'Scandal', 'Power' and others are popular shows in Nigeria. 'Atlanta', a new TV series by actor Donald Glover (who is also rapper Childish Gambino) also made its mark with its first season.

Atlanta is more of a quiet storm than a typhoon. The series is made up of three young men, Earn (played by Donald Glover), his cousin Paper Boi and the coolly aloof Darius.

Earn is trying to make some sense of his world as he tries to be a productive member of the society and take care of his daughter. His cousin Paper Boy is an underground rapper in Atlanta. Earn convinces Paper Boy to let him be his manager and together along with Darius try to come up from their environment.

It's an unusual black comedy that isn't loud and brash but subtle with charming humour. The series tackles realistic issues such as mental health, transsexualism in the black community, baby mama drama, the music hustle, social media trolling, in a casually, light hearted but very brilliant way.

Black TV series have always struck a chord among young Nigerians, Martin, Fresh Prince and most recently Power are examples. Atlanta is no different.

The up and down relationship between Earn and his baby mama is reminiscent of the many Nigerian guys who are struggling to make it and having to deal with their baby mama and kid by the side at the same time.

The music hustle of Paper Boy is no different. A lot of people have ditched the 9-5 route for music in this country hoping to get that big hit. Many of these up and coming acts are being managed by their brothers or relatives.

Darius just happens to be that guy who we know smokes all day and doesn't care about the future. All he just wants to do is just chill and be good.

Take away the Atlanta setting, and this show could easily be about three Nigerian guys figuring how to make it in life. As a matter of fact, Nigerians are talked about in two episodes of the show.

It's a pre-coming of age story, a Baby Boy TV series without the violence and gang culture. A lot of guys here are like Earn, Paper Boy and Darius trying to make sense of the world and living life as each day comes.
