During special Christian festivities, the Holy Land plays host to devout Christians and tourists alike who travel from far and wide to commemorate Easter-the day followers believe Jesus was resurrected in Jerusalem 2,000 years ago.
Easter Pilgrimage
A popular tourist attraction-Holy Sepulchre church in Jerusalem is always packed with worshippers on Easter Sunday. This Holy site is where Christians believe Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected.
Pilgrims report that a Mass will be held later in Bethlehem's Nativity Church, where it is believed that Jesus was born.
Catholics and others are celebrating Easter whereas Orthodox Christians, who follow a different calendar, were marking Palm Sunday with processions.
Elsewhere, Pope Francis has said that the Easter mystery requires the faithful to seek an answer "to the questions which challenge our faith, our fidelity, and our very existence."
