INEC to allow APC replace Audu, will not conduct fresh polls

Audu died on Sunday, November 22, 2015, after participating in the polls and being in the lead the day before.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reached a decision on the controversy surrounding the Kogi governorship elections following the death of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Abubakar Audu.

The commission has decided to allow the APC replace Audu while it conducts supplementary elections in 91 polling units.

Audu died on Sunday, November 22, 2015, after participating in the polls and being in the lead the day before.

The elections were later declared inconclusive by INEC due to irregularities in the 91 polling units earlier mentioned.

The commission also said that it will hold the supplementary elections on December 5, 2015.

Confusion had earlier arisen about how the new Kogi governor would be chosen following Audu’s death.

Some legal practitioners had said that a fresh election should be conducted while yet others were of the opinion that Audu’s running mate, James Faleke should be named governor.
