Throwback Thursday Meet Sir Emmanuel Omatsola, the broadcaster who announced Nigeria’s Independence

Many Nigerians know that the country gained Independence on October 1, 1960, but very few know that the achievement was announced by radio commentator, Sir Emmanuel Omatsola.

Omatsola made the announcement from the Race Course in Lagos saying that “Nigeria is a free, sovereign nation.”

He went ahead to describe the lowering of the British Union Jack flag and the hoisting of Nigeria’s Green White Green flag.

Below are 10 things you should know about Sir Emmanuel Omatsola:

  1. He was born on January 29, 1930.

  2. He was from the Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State.

  3. He had his secondary education at Igbobi College, Yaba, Lagos from 1945-1950.

  4. In 1953, he went into broadcasting at the then Nigerian Broadcasting Service (NBS), now Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN).

  5. He was also renowned as a Radio Outside Broadcast (OB) commentator on national events.

  6. He was trained for the Independence announcement by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) at its Overseas Service Headquarters at Bush House, London.

  7. During the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970, he was posted to head the Eastern Regional Service of Radio Nigeria at Enugu as Acting Controller.

  8. He attended Syracuse University in New York in 1962 to study mass communication with a specialization in broadcasting.

  9. Omatsola was a foundation member of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ).

  10. He died in 2012 and was buried in Mereje, Delta state on Thursday, January 31, 2013.
